Exceptional game... Buggy app
Fallen London is a fantastically textured game. It is rich in a particular kind of sooty, joyous mythology that is a bit like Lovecraft rolled up with Dishonored and condensed into a text-based RPG. The art is gorgeous and evocative and the storytelling is fun and well-written. Clearly a lot of love went into the making of it and it shines through (a sickly green, mind, but its endearing all the same).
The gameplay itself is fairly straightforward - it doesnt require a steep learning curve, although it is possible to get lost or not be able to understand why something is closed off to you. You have a number of turns you can use before you run out and have to wait for them to refresh, which has the potential to be aggravating but usually succeeds in its goal of getting you to pick it up several times a day so as to not waste the turns. The objectives are fairly unique and often take unexpected twists and turns. There are several completely unique factions you can associate with that add flavour to the dank, dark world they have crafted.
Overall, I give the game a 5/5. The atmosphere is ceaselessly delightful, the game mechanics are straightforward but compelling, and the premium options are worth the money without feeling obtrusive or crippling for those who want to play without.
However, the app itself has a few issues. It constantly gets stuck on the beginning "checking for content updates" screen and has to be force-closed to try again. The first time I went to sync my character it froze and wouldnt resume. I had to close out and reopen, only to be told I would have to start over since the save data hadnt took. Sometimes it lags in strange ways, or freezes entirely. If the app is made a bit more stable and smooth, I would have no hesitation to give it a full 5 stars!
